Peering Beneath the Mud – Science and the Discovery of Archaeological Remains by Richard Newman

Synopsis The talk will discuss all forms of remote sensing used for archaeological discovery including metal detection, Lidar, air and satellite photography, geophysics, ground penetrating radar and multi spectral analysis. It will look at the merits and pitfalls of each technique and their appropriateness of use in different circumstances. Richard will even cover dowsing.

Biography. Richard’s expertise is gathered through a 40+ year career as a professional archaeologist including having been the Director of the Lancaster University Archaeological Unit, County Archaeologist for Cumbria and most recently the county archaeologist for Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
